Corromandel: Hahei ist ein netter Platz zum Bleiben und auch fürs Abendessen "The Church" (die Kirche). Es ist mehr upmarket. Wir beendeten oben am Hahei Holiday Resort, welches ein sehr grosser Campground ist während der Hochsaison war es wirklich laut nicht wirklich der ruhige Platz. Die Kayaking Tour ist zu empfehlen.
Die Halbinsel Coromandel liegt nur 90 Minuten östlich von Auckland am Golf von Hauraki, doch man befindet sich in einer völlig anderen Welt. Regenwald und die gigantischen "Kauri"-Fichten bedecken vulkanische Hügel, Sandstrände mit Höhlen und kleinen Häfen bilden eine spektakuläre Küste. In Miranda kann man in heissen Quellen baden.

Die Bay of Plenty hat
so einiges zu bieten, was anderenorts in Neuseeland nicht in dieser Fülle
vorzufinden ist: viel Sonnenschein, einsame Nationalparks, grossen
Fischreichtum, ausgesprochen nette Leute, Seen, Flüsse, eine sehr interessante
Geschichte und die aktive Vulkaninsel, White Island.
Die Bay of Plenty erstreckt sich von Tauranga im Westen über Whakatane und
Opotiki bis nach Te Kaha am East Cape im Nordosten. Südlich wird die Bay of
Plenty von Rotorua und dem Te Urewera Nationalpark, dem grössten auf der
Nordinsel, begrenzt.
Geschichte
In Whakatane landete im 12ten Jahrhundert der
erste Maori, Toi te Huatahi. Sein Dorf lag hoch über Whakatanes Hafeneinfahrt.
Von hier aus wuchs die Bevölkerung rasch. Das East Cape wird auch oft als die Geburtsstätte
von Aotearoa, dem Land der grossen weissen Wolke, bezeichnet. In der Bay of
Plenty hat man die Möglichkeit, viele Maraes (Maori Versammlungshäuser) zu
bewundern. Die Schnitzkunst wird hier sehr lebendig gehalten.
Andere für Neuseeland wichtige historische Ereignisse nahmen am East Cape ihren
Anfang. Captain James Cook taufte die Region Bay of Plenty, weil er hier endlich
frischen Proviant und Süsswasser aufnehmen konnte, was im vorher in Gisborne
nicht gelang und er die Gegend deshalb Poverty Bay benannte. Viele Ortsnamen
stammen noch von Captain Cook ab.
Sehenswürdigkeiten
Die grössten Städte in der Bay of Plenty sind Tauranga mit seinem Hafen
Mt. Manganui, Rotorua und Whakatane. Um Te Puke herum werden immer noch sehr
viele grüne Kiwi-Fruechte (die man jetzt auch unter dem Namen Zespri kennt) und
neuerdings vor allem auch die Golden Kiwi angebaut.

White Island wurde von Captain James Cook so
getauft, als er 1769 durch die Bay of Plenty segelte. Der Maori Name für White
Island ist Whakaari, was übersetzt "sichtbar machen" heisst.
Dieser aktive Vulkan ist ein Andesite Vulkan (wie 70% aller Vulkane auf dem
sogenannten 'Pazifischen Ring des Feuers') und konstant aktiv. Er produziert ständig
Dämpfe, die über der Insel als weiße Wolke stehen und sie manchmal ganz einhüllen.
Eine Wanderung auf der White Island ist ein bisschen wie ein Gang auf dem Mond
oder auf der Oberfläche des Mars. Die Insel ist eine der best zugänglichsten
Vulkane auf der Welt.
Seit Dezember organisiert das Visitor Center
Matamata geführte Touren auf das Gelände von Hobbiton, auf dem Teile von Lord
of the Rings gefilmt wurden. Der Drehort liegt 15 Kilometer ausserhalb von
Matamata und ist ohne Begleitung kaum zu finden. Zu sehen sind - abgesehen von
der wunderschönen Landschaft mit Teich und dem beeindruckenden Party-Baum
allerdings nur ein paar halb verfallende Erdhöhlen, die für den Film angelegt
wurden.

Anfahrt: rund 150 km südlich von Auckland in südöstlicher Richtung (Highway 2 bei Mangatarata auf Highway 27 abzweigen.
Gefilmt wurde "lord of the Rins" an zwölf weiteren Drehorten in Neuseeland. Eindrücklich ist zum Beispiel die Gegend des Tongario-Nationalparks bei Taupo mit Lavafeldern und drei schneebedeckten Vulkanen, im Film das Land Mordor. Verschiedene Anbieter haben Touren zu den Sites im Programm. Doch abgesehen von der grossartigen Landschaft gibt es nichts, was an den Film erinnert, es handelt sich um normale Bustouren, bei denen hauptsächlich die übliche Neuseeland-Sehenswürdigkeiten besucht werden.

Rotorua: wir blieben im Funky Green Voyager Backpackers Hotel. Es war ein wirklich sauber und netter Platz, zum abhängen (hatte einen netten Garten usw.). Wenn Sie nur den thermischer Bereich besuchen gehen sie zu Waiotapu. Es ist bei weitem der bunteste und verschiedenste thermische Bereich. Dieser Platz hat eine sehr grosse Maori- Bevölkerung und hey, sind Sie ein Tourist. Wir schlagen vor, ein Maori- Konzert in Hangi zu sehen.
Im Herzen Neuseelands liegt Rotorua, die spirituelle Heimat der Maori. Mit den aktiven Vulkanen und brodelnden Schlammlöchern ist die Gegend seit über 160 Jahren ein Magnet für Touristen aus der ganzen Welt.
Rotorua erreicht man von Auckland innerhalb drei Autostunden und von Wellington aus dauert die Fahrt ca. 5 Stunden.

Extremabenteuern steigern. Versuchen Sie Rap-Jumping an einer Bergwand, machen Sie aus
3000 Metern Höhe einen Tandemsprung mit dem Fallschirm aus einem Flugzeug, treiben Sie
auf einem Bob Wildwasserstromschnellen hinunter, fahren Sie im Jetboot oder im Gokart
einen nahe gelegenen Berg hinab. Oder versuchen Sie sich am Zorbing, bei dem Sie Hals
über Kopf in einem riesigen Ball den Hügel herunter rollen.
Die Region von Rotorua zählt auch zu den besten Angelgebieten des Landes, in denen Ihnen
ein Fang beinahe sicher ist, vor allem, wenn Sie einen einheimischen professionellen
Führer dabei haben.
Nach einem anstrengenden Tag voller Besichtigungen oder erschöpfender Aktivitäten
können Sie sich in einem Thermalbad entspannen. Am Abend haben Sie vielleicht Lust, bei
einer Sing- und Tanzaufführung Bekanntschaft mit der Kultur der Maori zu machen und
anschliessend das in Erdöfen zubereitete traditionelle Essen ihrer Gastgeber (Hangi

Waimangu Volcanic Valley
The vulcanic features her are all very recent. Die Vulkane wurden beim Erdbeben von
Tarawera 1886 gebildet. Der Park ist selbstgeführt und kann bei Fuss und teilweise auch
per Boot besichtigt werden.

Tarawera Falls
Es gibt drei bis vier Wege, um zum Wasserfall zu gelangen.
Mit dem Auto sind es 70 km von Rotorua via SH30 und der forestry township of Kawerau. Um
in den Wald zu gelangen braucht man eine Erlaubnis, welche man bei der Kaweau Information
centre an der Plunket Street (Mo - Fr 08.30 - 16.30, Sa/So 10.00 - 15.00 Uhr) erhält. Die
Erlaubnis kostet $2.-- und ist zwei Wochen gültig. Man erhält Informationen über die
Wege in den Wald über die ungeteerte Strasse zum Wasserfall Parkplatz. Das Licht immer
eingeschalten lassen und langsam fahren. Vom Parkplatz sind es zu Fuss 10 Min. zum
Wasserfall. Hier gibt es einen Zickzack Weg nach oben, um hinter den Wasserfall zu
gelangen. Der Weg führt durch den Busch entlang von riesigen Ponga Farnen, bevor man den
Punkt erreicht, wo der Fluss im Untergrund verschwindet. Dann geht es vorbei an
einigen kleinen Wasserfällen und einem Schwimmloch zum Kopf des Lake Tarawera. Für die 4
km lange Wanderung braucht man 2½ Stunden (ein Weg).

Es ist hohe Unterhaltung. Die Tiere machen mit und sind dressiert. Die Show ist sehr
informativ, unterhaltsam und professionell.
Skyline Skyrides
Jedermann der Rotorua besucht sollte mit der Gondel eine Fahrt in die Berge unternehmen.
Hinunter gibt es dann eine Rutschbahn, wo man in einem Plastikarren mit Rädern und
primitiven Bremsen sitzt.

Gebaut im Stil der Spanischen Mission während der Depression von 1933. Die Bäder wurden
1982 geschlossen, renoviert und 1999 wieder eröffnet. Es gibt ein Museum und ein Video

Whakarewarewa Forest mit den Giant Redwoods
Lage: südlich ausserhalb von Rotorua
geeignet zum Wandern und Mountain Biking fahren. Bevor man den Wald betritt informiert man

Hier gibt es eine Karte. Die Wanderungen dauern von 20 Min. bis 8 Stunden. Die
gigantischen kalifornischen Redwoods findet man entlang der Long Mile Road und ist
zugleich der Kürzeste Weg. Der längste führt zum Blue und Green Lake.
Im malerischen Herzen der Nordinsel liegt die Region Taupo, die das Gebiet südlich von
Rotorua um dem riesigen Kratersee Lake Taupo, Neuseelands grösstem See (619 km²), und
die Stadt Taupo umfasst.
Zu dieser Region zählt der südliche Teil des thermalen Gürtels, der sich von dem Vulkan
White Island in der Bay of Plenty über Rotorua bis hin zum Tongariro National Park
erstreckt. Um den See herum, bei dem es sich genau genommen um einen Vulkankrater handelt,
gibt es an vielen Stellen heisse Quellen. Nördlich von Taupo, unweit des Wairakei
International Golf Course, wird unterirdischer Dampf für die Stromerzeugung genutzt.
Einer der wenigen Ausflüsse des Sees ist der mächtige Waikato River, Neuseelands
längster Fluss, der aus einer engen Felsspalte bei den Huka Falls herausschiesst.
Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten/Aktivitäten Lake Taupo, der Tongariro River und andere
Nebenflüsse sind für das Angeln von Regenbogenforellen schon seit langem weltweit
bekannt. Viele Besucher geniessen es aber, sich nur umzusehen, an den vielen anderen
Wassersportaktivitäten teilzunehmen oder sich einfach an diesem Ort zu entspannen, der zu
den schönsten der Nordinsel zählt. Für Unternehmungslustige hält die Region Reiten,
Bungy-Jumpen, Raften, Golf und Wanderungen bereit.
Der Wairakei International Golf Course ist einer von sieben Golfplätzen der Region und
zählt zu den besten des Landes.

Marakopa Falls
In mehreren Stufen schäumt der Marokopa River über eine 30 m hohe Felskante.
Anfahrt: Die Nebenstrecke zum Fischerort Marokopa ist landschaftlich reizvoll, jedoch sehr
kurvenreich. Im weiteren Verlauf des Marokopa River ungeteert und mit Camper Vans nur
schwer zu befahren. Das Departement of Conservation gibt ein Faltblatt heraus, das kurze
Urwaldspaziergänge und die wichtigsten Naturschönheiten auf der Strecke beschreibt.
Ruakuri
Wenige Kilometer hinter Waitomo zweigt ein Strässchen zum Ausgangspunkt des
halbstündigen Ruakuri Bushwalks durch Urwald zu einer natürlichen Felsbrücke ab. Die
Ruakuri-Höhle selbst gilt den Maori als tapu, diente früher als Zeremonial- und
Grabstätte.

Piripiri Cave
Nach einer kurzen Fahrt mit schönen Ausblicken über das westliche King Country senkt
sich die Strasse und folgt dem Lauf des Marokopa River. Kurz vor Piripiri führt ein
viertelstündiger Weg zu einer Felsbrücke aus Sandstein, der Mangapohue Natural Bridge.

Ambiente: Der Wellington Zoo wurde 1906 gegründet und ist damit Neuseelands ältester Zoo. Die Anlage wurde über die letzten Jahre modernisiert, um den Tieren eine artgerechte Umgebung zu bieten. So wurde im März 2000 z.B. das neue Freigehege für Paviane eröffnet. Neben Zebras, Affen und Bären gibt es im Wellington Zoo natürlich auch spezifisch neuseeländische Tiere zu sehen, z.B. das Wappentier Neuseelands, den Kiwi, und die Tuatara, ein lebendes Fossil aus der Dinosaurierzeit. Der Wellington Zoo ist besonders stolz auf seine Zuchterfolge. Im Januar 2000 kamen 3 Sumatratigerbabies zur Welt. Der Sumatratiger ist vom Aussterben bedroht, weltweit gibt es nur etwa 400 Exemplare in freier Wildbahn.
Die Kiwis sieht man zwischen 10 und 12 Uhr am besten.

If you don't mind a little inconvenience, and do mind paying the full fare on the InterIslander then send your vehicle across the water with Strait Shipping. Their price for carry a car across the strait is only $110. Their timetable is a bit complex - basically they run two or three times a day - but for details visit their timetable page. The crossing takes 4 hours. Passenger places are limited - these vessels are designed mainly to carry trucks - so you might have to travel on the InterIsland ferry while your car goes with the cheaper competition.
Strait Shipping operates conventional freight and passenger ferry services between Picton and Wellington, with up to five sailings a day. Timetables are subject to change.
